Martin Luther’s Catechism: Forming the Faith

More than five hundred years ago, Martin Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses sparked the Reformation; even a little over a decade later, as the Reformation gained momentum, he continued to focus on the most basic education of believers within the Christian church. A mature faith relies on the joint nurturing of the family and the church. Therefore, Luther inherited the Catholic tradition of the “Catechism of Faith” and wrote his own version, using a concise question-and-answer format to provide succinct explanations of the most fundamental aspects of Christian faith, including the Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, baptism, and Holy Communion, for parents and the church. In short, Luther had already begun writing materials for “discipleship”!

However, times have changed. Five hundred years ago, “discipleship” materials have been reduced to rigid memorization and quizzes in the modern church, or have even disappeared altogether. Professor Ungerer, the author of this book, experienced a lifelong love-hate relationship with catechisms until he finally discovered their profound meaning, and then took it upon himself to teach and convey their value. In this book, he uses a historian’s perspective to compare the importance of catechisms in the past and present; he uses theologian’s insight to point out their timeless and ever-evolving nature; and he uses his Christian life to testify to the gracious God to whom the catechisms point.

作者簡介 About the Author

提摩太．溫格爾（Timothy J. Wengert），美國費城信義宗神學院榮譽教授，專長教會歷史。一九八九至二○一三年在該校任教。

溫格爾教授自言，他與信仰問答之間充滿了［愛恨情仇］，中學時期的他，在信義宗教會和學校學習信仰問答，卻流於死記背誦，對其意涵一知半解；直到後來他有幸取得十六世紀版本的路德信仰問答，才領略其奧妙，不僅在牧會時用來教導及宣講，後來又在神學院授，講授如何改良傳統使用信仰問答的方式，以發揚路德信仰問答的珍貴為己任。

溫格爾教授在宗教改革領域有許多著作，與柯樂伯教授合編新版的協同書，裡面收錄的小問答就是他所翻譯的，他的小問答譯本在美國福音信義會也廣泛被使用。

Timothy J. Wengert is an emeritus professor at Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, specializing in church history. He taught at the seminary from 1989 to 2013.

Professor Wengert describes his relationship with the Catechism as one of intense love and hate. During his high school years, he studied the Catechism in Lutheran churches and schools, but merely memorized it, gaining only a superficial understanding of its meaning. It wasn’t until he acquired a 16th-century version of Luther’s Catechism that he grasped its profound meaning. He not only used it for teaching and preaching during his pastoral ministry but also later taught at the seminary on how to improve the traditional use of the Catechism, taking it upon himself to promote its preciousness.

Professor Wengert has written extensively on the Reformation. His translation of the Small Catechisms included in the new edition of the Book of Concord, co-edited with Professor C. K. Robb, is widely used in Lutheran churches in the United States.
