Luther the Reformer
The “History and Thought Studies Translation Series” selects classic scholarly research works rich in academic content, highly readable, broadly relevant, and expansive in intellectual scope, to present to the Chinese academic community.
The series, titled “History and Thought,” emphasizes that a true grasp of intellectual trends must be based on a historical approach, rather than attempting to interpret all intellectual history as contemporary history. Only by truly approaching the history of thought can we truly approach the vibrant currents of history.
The works selected for translation in this series are based on the two Mediterranean civilizations. Given the breadth of the Mediterranean, the multidimensional fusion, conflict, and transformation of Greek, Roman, and Judeo-Christian traditions, transcending national limitations, ultimately reveal their universal values. The first Mediterranean civilization flourished from the 1st to the 6th centuries AD, while the Renaissance, beginning in the 14th century, represented the second flourishing of Western civilization. The emergence, maturation, and full manifestation of these two civilizations demonstrate the different dimensions contributed by Greece, Rome, and Christianity, reflecting the complexity, depth, tension, and reflective power of the Western intellectual tradition. The works selected in this series all take a regional perspective, focusing on the Mediterranean, and the authors use a holistic historical consciousness to demonstrate the vitality of thought in different periods. With this perspective, the selected works present the inherent fusion of social history, religion, philosophy, and lifestyle, thus restoring thought to a historical way of life.
