Early Luther: A Breakthrough of Faith
On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted his Ninety-Five Theses, refuting the practice of indulgences, in Wittenberg Cathedral. From that moment on, the previously stagnant Middle Ages were swept up in the massive Reformation, reshaping the face of religion, society, and the state, and influencing the development of the world.
Past Luther studies have largely focused on exploring the point of disconnect between Luther’s thought and medieval spiritual and theological thought, neglecting the fact that while there is a traceable continuity between the two, there are also watershed moments of breakthrough and paradigm. Professor Hamm’s decades of profound research and rigorous discourse on medieval thought not only points out a long-neglected blind spot in contemporary Luther studies but also paves a new path for future exploration.
To truly understand Luther and gain a rigorous and fair understanding of him, Early Luther—The Breakthrough of Faith is an indispensable and faithful classic work that presents Luther’s original character.

Synopsis: Prof. Dr. Brendt Hamm, a renowned German historian specializing in medieval church history and theology, in his book Early Luther: A Breakthrough in Faith, begins with Martin Luther’s early lectures, discussing the Ninety-Five Theses, the struggle of repentance and spiritual dilemmas, faith and love, justification and Christian freedom, and Luther’s relationship with mysticism. He presents the social and intellectual context of the time and further explores how the religious world he inhabited inspired him to develop a new, biblical-centered theological reflection, ultimately breaking down the traditional church system. It is hoped that this book can help readers understand how Luther’s theology developed from the theology and pious spiritual practices of the late Middle Ages, gain a better understanding of the nature of the Reformation movement, and become more acutely aware of Luther’s new understanding of faith and justification, thereby redefining the relationship between God, man, and the world.
