Selected Works of Martin Luther (Volume One): New and Revised Edition

For five centuries, Martin Luther’s thought has resonated deeply, pointing out that we must receive the grace and mercy of a loving God solely through faith. His works not only address fundamental religious doctrines, church organization, and worship liturgy, but also hold significant sway over ethics, family, education, and even social, political, and economic matters.

Even today, his writings have influenced the faith and lives of the church and individual Christians, and the culture of society as a whole, to varying degrees, both tangibly and intangibly.

The first volume of Selected Works of Luther contains nine of Luther’s most famous works. It begins with “The Ninety-Five Theses,” followed by “On Good Works” and “The Authority of the Pope.” The former emphasizes that faith alone is the true good work that leads to salvation; the latter directly criticizes the Pope, dismantling the foundations of his divine authority.

The fourth to sixth points are considered the three great works of the Reformation: “Open Letter to the Christian Nobility of Germany,” “The Babylonian Captivity of the Church,” and “The Freedom of the Christians.” These three works represent the culmination of Luther’s national, theological, and religious thought, liberating government, church, and individuals from various forms of authority, sacramental systems, and the shackles of human nature.

The seventh and eighth points address the deviations and excessive behaviors of believers. The ninth point addresses the deviations and overreach of the government.

The newly revised edition is more in line with the times. The entire book has been re-typeset and revised, and the wording has been updated to better reflect the spirit of the 21st century.

About the Author

Martin Luther (1483-1546), a member of the Augustinian Order of the Catholic Church, discovered the biblical truth of “justification by grace through faith” (justification through the full forgiveness of sins by Jesus Christ, received through faith given by God, and thus justified by God). He opposed the Roman Catholic Church’s exaltation of good works as a necessary condition for salvation and the papal assertion of inerrancy.

This pioneering figure of church reform, combining Biblical scholarship, pastor, and theologian, unintentionally sparked a church renewal movement in Germany and throughout Europe, becoming a forerunner of church reform.

Luther was a prolific writer, producing apologetics, maxims, pamphlets, essays, sermons, tabletop talks, Bible lectures, and theological works, all written to uphold the pure word of God and for diverse readers. He prioritized the pure preaching and teaching of God’s word above all else. Later scholars who studied Luther’s theology and the period of the Church Reformation also found that this shepherd of God’s people did indeed leave a solid legacy of exegetical, pastoral, and theological knowledge for the church in his time.
