這個階段的《書信》通常分為三類:第一,家信,路德和妻子波拉之 間的通信,也有少量寫給兒子的信;無情未必真豪傑,憐子如何不丈夫。路德的家信情意綿綿,情真意切,折射出路德俠膽柔情的一面。第二,和大學 同仁以及一些政要之間的通信,主要關注教義以及政治問題;第三,有關宗 教會議,這和1518年路德召集的會議類似,但會議結果卻大大地違背了他 的初衷,是他非常不願見到的事與願違。

Luther’s Works Volume Seven: Letters II and Table Conversations
To fully understand a historical figure, while their major works are important, their daily life offers a deeper glimpse into their lesser-known aspects. Martin Luther’s Letters and Table Conversations are crucial works for understanding Luther’s life trajectory.
The Letters from this period are generally divided into three categories: First, family letters, correspondence between Luther and his wife Katharina, and a few letters to his son; “A heartless man is not necessarily a hero, and a loving father is no less a man.” Luther’s family letters are tender and sincere, reflecting his chivalrous yet tender side. Second, correspondence with university colleagues and some political figures, mainly concerning doctrinal and political issues; third, correspondence concerning religious councils, similar to the council Luther convened in 1518, but the outcome of the council greatly deviated from his original intentions, a result he greatly desired.
The lodgers in Luther’s household had a close relationship with him and ate meals at his home. These people dined with Luther at different times, collecting his casual conversations during these meals, which were later compiled into a book. Because those qualified to dine at Luther’s home were all people particularly close to him, Luther made no attempt to disguise or conceal anything in front of them. He completely let loose, drinking heartily and speaking freely without any reservations. They listened to Luther preach theology while drinking beer, even rambling on about it.

Synopsis: The Letters in Volume VII of the Luther Collected Works present 89 letters written by Luther between January 1531 and February 14, 1546, just four days before his death. The period covered in these letters is often referred to as “Old” Luther’s period; this contrasts with “Young” Luther’s period, which is often described as lacking intellectual vitality, dogmatism, increasing self-centeredness, irritability, and a “vested-interest mentality” of the church and bourgeois mentality. Within all these labels lies a truth. In the portrait of the elderly, we find wrinkles and fine lines not seen in the portraits of the same person in his youth, or perhaps we simply do not wish to see them. The Table Conversations in this volume are selected from the six volumes of the Weimar edition of Table Conversations, comprising about one-tenth of the total content. Readers will find that while most of the conversations took place at Luther’s dining table, some did not. As mentioned above, many of the recorders lived in the home of this reformer. Sometimes they would walk with him in the garden and record what he said to them there. Sometimes they would overhear or eavesdrop on Luther’s conversations with his wife and write them down. Sometimes they would travel with him and report what they said along the way.

Martin Luther was born into a tenant farmer’s family in Eisleben, Germany. His father encouraged him to study law at the University of Erfurt. There, he studied philosophy and law, read classical texts, and earned his master’s degree at the age of twenty, becoming a civil lawyer. However, after a lightning strike during a journey that killed his companion, Luther abandoned law and entered an Augustinian monastery in July 1505. He was ordained a priest in 1507 and then served as a lecturer in philosophy and Biblical studies at the University of Wittenberg, earning his doctorate in theology at the age of thirty. In 1517, opposing indulgences, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the doors of the Wittenberg church, thus launching a revolutionary church reform movement known in history as the Reformation.
