只有經歷了抗爭,路德才會破繭而出,成為真正的新人,強大的意 志力使得路德沒有倒下來,沒有隨波逐流,而是成為時代的中流砥柱。 所以才在沃木斯帝國會議上堅定的說出「這是我的立場」,聲音並不洪亮,卻擲地有聲,響徹整個世界。「我的良心受到上帝話語的束縛,我不能也不 會向任何事退縮,因為違背良心行事是不安全也不 真實的。」
Luther’s Works Volume Six: Letters I
When reading Luther’s letters, we should remember that, apart from official statements, they are private documents that reflect Luther’s emotions more directly than any of his other literary works. These letters stemmed from the complex circumstances Luther found himself in. However, the insights they reveal are meaningful to people today.
Luther wrote 119 letters between 1507 and March 1522, the period following his return from Wartburg. These letters reveal what is generally considered the most turbulent period of Luther’s life: his monastic and academic career, the attacks on the Roman Catholic Church, the Inquisition, the Congress of Worms, and his exile in Wartburg. Luther, brought to Wartburg and recalled there, faced entirely different problems. On the surface, Luther had reached a turning point in his career.
Luther wrote 117 letters between March 1522 and October 1530. During this period, Luther, considered a heretic and outlaw, returned from Wartburg and re-emerged on the stage of German history, continuing his influence until the Augsburg Reichstag in 1530. To understand Luther’s inner journey during this time, one only needs to remember: in 1521, Luther faced the Emperor alone, firmly expressing his Gospel faith; and by 1530, a group of representatives from the imperial states stood before the Emperor, affirming his Gospel beliefs by presenting him with the Augsburg Confession.
Luther studied the Bible, but he did not listen without prejudice. His method of overcoming prejudice was to listen to both the words of the Bible and the echoes of his own heart. He said, “God speaks to you as your nature is.”
Only through struggle could Luther emerge from his cocoon and become a truly new person. His powerful will prevented him from collapsing or drifting with the tide, instead making him a pillar of his time. That’s why he firmly stated at the Walmus Reichstag, “This is my position,” his voice not loud, but resounding throughout the world. “My conscience is bound by the word of God; I cannot and will not back down from anything, because acting against one’s conscience is neither safe nor true.”

Synopsis: This volume, edited by Reverend Pei Lian Shan of Guangdong Union Theological Seminary and translated by several mainland scholars, will be published in two volumes of Luther’s letters in Chinese. This volume covers more than 200 important letters written by Luther between 1507 and 1530.

Martin Luther was born into a tenant farmer’s family in Eisleben, Germany. His father encouraged him to study law at the University of Erfurt. There, he studied philosophy and law, read classical texts, and earned his master’s degree at the age of twenty, becoming a civil lawyer. However, after a lightning strike during a journey that killed his companion, Luther abandoned law and entered an Augustinian monastery in July 1505. He was ordained a priest in 1507 and then served as a lecturer in philosophy and Biblical studies at the University of Wittenberg, earning his doctorate in theology at the age of thirty. In 1517, opposing indulgences, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the doors of the Wittenberg church, thus launching a revolutionary church reform movement known in history as the Reformation.
