Luther’s Works Volume Three: Faith and Society I
Undoubtedly, Martin Luther was the most important leader of the 16th-century European Reformation movement. The Protestant churches in mainland China are committed to improving their church affairs. It is believed that the publication of the Chinese edition of The Collected Works of Luther will have a positive and far-reaching impact on the establishment and development of Protestant churches in mainland China.
—Dr. Gao Feng, President of the China Christian Council
Luther’s spiritual journey was extremely arduous and precious. His rediscovery of the Gospel of justification through faith brought immense comfort and freedom to a fearful and desperate conscience. His life’s work and writings all revolved around clarifying and witnessing to this Gospel as their core mission. The publication of the Chinese edition of The Collected Works of Luther is a rich treasure trove of firsthand materials for studying Luther’s thought, and a continuous source of his ever-renewing theological insights.
—Dr. Yu Jibin – Retired President of the Chinese Lutheran Theological Seminary, Taiwan
Translating the Collected Writings of Martin Luther is a blessing for Chinese Christians and a great treasure for Lutherans. It helps us to go deeper, get closer to Martin Luther’s thought, better understand the essence of the Bible and the power of God’s Word, and better understand the spirit of the Reformation! Therefore, I highly recommend it; it is essential reading!
—Pastor Ye Quanqing – Bishop of the Lutheran Church in Malaysia
Martin Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses initially focused on the harm of indulgences. Later, Luther’s concern for the interpretation of the pure Gospel inevitably encompassed church teaching and Christian life (baptism, justification, faith and the law, councils and the church, and many other matters). This collection shows that during Luther’s lifetime, his extensive writings and teachings, even articles written simply according to his ideas, were widely collected and shared. Over decades, Luther’s pioneering reform work touched the church and the entire Christian world. However, Luther’s contributions far exceeded his own time; people of all ages, places, cultures, and languages can greatly benefit from his teachings.
—Dr. Henry Luther – Professor Emeritus, St. Louis Collegiate Theological Seminary, American Lutheran Church
This volume is the first in the Chinese edition of the second series of Luther’s Writings, “Faith and Society.” In 1517, Luther opened the door to the Reformation. For the next thirty years, he was beset by numerous difficulties: social unrest, papal authority, theological giants, worldly leaders, and even fellow believers and workers relentlessly pressured him. In such turbulent circumstances, a slight wavering in faith could jeopardize the situation. Luther, rooted in Christ and faithful to the one holy catholic church, remained steadfast and unwavering. In times of chaos, he both resisted attacks and established regulations, thus firmly establishing the foundation of the church. Times change, and the sounds of turmoil continue to resound, but God will always protect us, just as He supported Luther five hundred years ago.
—Dr. Rong Ziyou – President of the Hong Kong Lutheran Church

About the Author
Martin Luther was born into a tenant farmer’s family in Eisleben, Germany. His father encouraged him to study law at the University of Erfurt. There, he studied philosophy and law, read classical texts, and earned his master’s degree at the age of twenty, becoming a civil lawyer. However, after a lightning strike during a journey that killed his companion, Luther abandoned law and entered an Augustinian monastery in July 1505. He was ordained a priest in 1507 and then served as a lecturer in philosophy and Biblical studies at the University of Wittenberg, earning his doctorate in theology at the age of thirty. In 1517, opposing indulgences, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the doors of the Wittenberg church, thus launching a revolutionary church reform movement known in history as the Reformation.
