Luther’s Work Volume one: Reformation Writings I
Tradition is always the most stubborn thing. Reforms that break with the old and establish the new must overcome not only the shackles of thought, but also existing power and established interests. They require immense patience, courage, perseverance, and even life itself.
In 16th-century Germany, there was a theologian, Martin Luther, who, starting with his “Ninety-Five Theses,” challenged the more than a thousand-year-old tradition of the Roman Catholic Church, directly addressing the corruption of the time, using truth to set things right, and dedicating his life to promoting the revolutionary Reformation. This movement also sparked a wave of social reform thought, paving the way for spiritual freedom and social liberation in Europe and other regions.
Today, the global “Lutheran revival” has spread throughout China, influencing Chinese academic thought. The publication plan for a fifteen-volume Chinese edition of The Collected Works of Luther was thus launched, bringing together academic elites from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan to retranslate Luther’s important works, divided into four themes: Reformation documents, Biblical sermons, theology, and other selections. This initiative aims to promote Luther’s Reformation spirit and foster research on Luther within the Chinese community and overseas, as well as international academic exchange.

About the Author
Martin Luther was born into a tenant farmer’s family in Eisleben, Germany. His father encouraged him to study law at the University of Erfurt. There, he studied philosophy and law, read classical texts, and earned his master’s degree at the age of twenty, becoming a civil lawyer. However, after a lightning strike during a journey that killed his companion, Luther abandoned law and entered an Augustinian monastery in July 1505. He was ordained a priest in 1507 and then served as a lecturer in philosophy and Biblical studies at the University of Wittenberg, earning his doctorate in theology at the age of thirty. In 1517, opposing indulgences, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the doors of the Wittenberg church, thus launching a revolutionary church reform movement known in history as the Reformation.
