Luther’s Small Catechism with Explanation

First published in Germany in 1529, the Small Catechism is approaching its 500th Anniversary. The catechism is divided into six sections (the “chief six parts”): the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, The Sacrament of Holy Baptism, Confession, and The Sacrament of the Altar. Each section is proceeded with these words: “As the head of the family should teach” those in the home.

Nearly five centuries has brought changes to the nations of the world, but Luther’s Small Catechism continues to uphold Christian values ​​for homes in every nation, certainly to include brothers and sisters of Chinese heritage. The majesty of this little book continues to be its simple clarity. In clear, concise statements the Small Catechism answers the question of faith—”What does this mean?” What does this mean for life and salvation?

For those who read catechism, the question (What does this mean?) ever and always leads to Christ, our Savior. Christ, our Savior, is the ultimate gift of the Small Catechism so that we may say, “I believe that Jesus Christ … is my Lord, who has redeemed me … that I may be His own … in everlasting righteousness” (excerpted from the Apostles’ Creed, 2nd Article, Luther’s explanation).
