Of Good Comfort : Martin Luther’s Letters to the Depressed and Their Significance for Pastoral Care Today
Pastoral care for those suffering from depression is a crucial issue for pastors today. Martin Luther, a renowned sufferer of depression and an outstanding theologian and pastoral adventurer, wrote numerous letters of comfort to those he pastored who were also suffering from depression. This book, selected from 21 of Luther’s 102 letters, offers a glimpse into how Luther’s theology was applied to times of life’s difficulties and struggles of faith. His dissertation won the 2014 President’s Award for Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation. Adapted from his dissertation, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the history, medicine, and psychological counseling related to depression, focusing on Luther’s theology and methods of pastoral care. It reveals the wisdom and inspiration needed for self-care, caring for others, and developing the art of helping others.
Pastoral care is the practice of theology in a specific space, with a specific person.
This is the first complete collection of 21 letters from Martin Luther to those suffering from depression. It has received a 5-star rating on Amazon.com.
Martin Luther was a renowned sufferer of depression and an outstanding theologian and pastoral adventurer.
His epistolary writing has been hailed as “a medium for creating miracles,” with one dying person saying, “Luther’s letters truly brought me back to life!”
In 2008, the author participated in pastoral counseling with three students suffering from depression, sharing several letters of encouragement from Martin Luther. Unexpectedly, these 500-year-old letters spoke powerfully to the students’ life circumstances, far exceeding the assistance provided by the author and other caregivers.
The author delves deeper into Luther’s letters of encouragement to those suffering from depression, selecting 21 from 102 of the most original and interesting letters. The narrative perspective is akin to being present at an individual pastoral counseling session, offering a glimpse into how Luther’s theology was applied to moments of life’s difficulties and struggles of faith.
Luther’s writing possesses a remarkable frankness and precision; his uniquely youthful language resonates with modern people, skillfully using the remedies of biblical texts to heal the soul. Contemporary readers find in Luther, a pastor who was both a sufferer of depression and a caregiver for those with depression, that depression is not a failure of faith, but rather a part of the faith journey, and can even be seen as a marker of spiritual growth.
