John Theodore Mueller was born near Janesville, Minn., April 5, 1885,
the son of the Rev. Andrew Mueller and wife Ottilie. After preparation in St. PauL Milwaukee, and Fort Wayne Concordias, he entered Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and was graduated in 1907. Upon graduation he became an instructor at Luther College in New Orleans, and subsequently at Wittenberg Academy, Wittenberg. Wis. In 1913 he became pastor of St. John’s Church in Hubbell, Mich., and in 1917 at Zion in Ottawa and Trinity in Marseilles. Ill. In 1920 he was called as professor of dogmatics and exegesis at Concordia Seminary, where he continued to teach until his retirement June 30, 1964.

Called as support to the late Franz Pieper, he produced the volume
that first conveyed the contents of Pieper’s Dogmatik in English (1934) and in 1946 prepared a one-volume revision for use by German pastors, He was deeply interested in missions, was the editor of Die Missionstaube from 1923 to 1929, for 13 years was a member of the missionary board of the Synodical Conference, and prepared numerous volumes on missionary themes. He was a coeditor of Der Lutheraner from 1920 until his last illness. He was chairman of the Young People’s Literature Board of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod for 30 years. He was one of the first commissioners to the Bad Boll conference in Germany after World War II. He contributed to the CONCORDIA THEOLOGICAL MONTHLY since 1920. For many years he contributed materials to the Lutheran Annual and to the Kalendet.

For 27 years he was assistant pastor of Bethlehem Church in St. Louis.
In recent years during a prolonged vacancy at Bethany Church, he rendered appreciated services of preaching and pastoral care, He was an indefatigable essayist, lecturer, and writer, and a poet (especially in German) of no mean ability.
