The Theology of Martin Luther
In the early 1920s, I regularly lectured and held seminars on Lutheran theology at the Universities of Rostock and Erlangen, and this book is an edited version of the lecture notes I used at that time. Much of the research I conducted in preparation for these lectures, as well as many of my papers on Luther, especially those I presented at Lutheran Society conferences over the past decades, have been considerably revised and incorporated into this book.
Both the writing of this book and the lectures were for the same purpose: to provide a comprehensive overview of the fundamental content of Lutheran theology. I have not intended to summarize the results of “Luther studies,” much less to introduce the results of my own particular research. I have merely occasionally participated in explicit discussions of the results of this research. I cannot possibly keep up with, or provide a comprehensive evaluation of, the extensive research now being conducted on Lutheran theology by new educators and the growing number of Roman Catholic scholars—although I consider myself familiar with the most important parts of these studies. As a result, the bibliographical index at the end of each chapter is rather simple and incomplete.
I have striven to vividly depict Luther’s theology based on my ongoing study of primary sources, and my depiction will contribute to theological research—and therefore to the evangelization of our time. This book is not written for experts; it is intended for theologians and pastors in general, as well as anyone engaged in evangelistic work in any way who wishes to apply what they have learned from Luther in their ministry.

保羅‧阿爾特豪斯（Paul Althaus，1888年2月4日－1966年5月18日）是德國路德宗神學家。他出生於漢諾威省的奧伯斯哈根，逝世於埃爾蘭根。 1914年至1925年間，他曾擔任多位牧師。 1925年，他被任命為哥廷根大學實踐神學和系統神學副教授，兩年後晉升為正教授。
1933年，作為埃爾蘭根大學的神學教授，他可能是當時最權威的路德宗專家。
Paul Althaus (4 February 1888 – 18 May 1966) was a German Lutheran theologian. He was born in Obershagen in the Province of Hanover, and he died in Erlangen. He held various pastorates from 1914 to 1925, when he was appointed associate professor of practical and systematic theology at the University of Göttingen, becoming full professor two years later.
In 1933, when a professor of theology at the University of Erlangen, was probably the leading Luther authority of his day.
