(Rev. Dr. Timothy Dost)

Luther’s Works Volume Five: Faith and Society III

“A glance at the table of contents reveals two distinctive features of this volume: first, all the works included are from the last twenty years of Luther’s life; second, the topics addressed transcend the church.” Reforms within the internal system. Relations between church and state, rebellions, wars, radical reforms, relations with Jewish faith… Luther responded to each of these areas, addressing the conflicts and controversies that arose with the Reformation movement. The issues that troubled Luther in the past continue to trouble the church and society today. This volume begins with Luther’s meditation on Magnificat, in which he gently confesses his Christian faith, forming the spiritual foundation for his connection of the Gospel to the world and society.”
— Dr. Henry Luther, Professor Emeritus, St. Louis Collaborative Theological Seminary

“This volume includes some of Luther’s most controversial works and writings of great value to those facing dilemmas. In Magnificat, we…” Mary was still revered even though Luther did not adopt a path of completely abandoning Catholic tradition. Luther asked the faithful to uphold civil order, while simultaneously refusing to associate with those who sought to overthrow everything at once. His On Secular Power argued that people should obey a government that acts in a manner pleasing to God. Jesus Christ Born a Jew and On the Jews and Their Lies reveal his both affirmative and negative views of the Jewish people. However, within this tension, he still believed the Jews would be saved. This volume is the culmination of this reformation, the result of the reformer’s arduous work, and it gives the reader the opportunity to make a sincere assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of this reformer who served Jesus Christ.
—Dr. Durst (Rev.) Dr. Timothy Dost, Professor of History and Reformation Theology at St. Louis Collegiate Theological Seminary, Lutheran Church, USA

This volume contains thirteen articles written by Luther during his active promotion of the Church Reformation and in his later years. The articles can be divided into four categories:
The first category is a devotional essay on Mary’s veneration of God—”The Magnificat.” The reader can sense that this is not only a devotional essay but also guidance for John the Baptist, who claimed Luther as his spiritual father, on how to be a prince.
The second category consists of eight articles on the relationship between church and state. Five of these, such as “On Secular Power,” remind Christian subjects (the church) how to deal with supreme (governmental) power, including spiritual and secular power; the other three, such as “Can Soldiers Also Be Saved?”, concern “just wars.”
The third category consists of three articles on the relationship between Christians and Jews, in which Luther fully expresses his attitude towards Jews, which shifted from friendliness to hostility, and the theological basis for this. Here, we can understand that even Luther could not escape the immense wave of anti-Semitic culture in Europe at that time!
The fourth category is Luther’s “Against the Antinomians,” Part B. From this, we see Luther’s rationale for opposing the antinomians and his relatively comprehensive view of the law.
—Dr. Yeh Tai-chang, Chief Editor, Volume Five of Luther’s Works

Synopsis: The works collected in this volume were written by Luther between 1519 and 1530. While the dates overlap considerably with Volumes I and II, the period spanned is longer than that of the previous two volumes. From the Leipzig Debates of 1519 to the Augsburg Conference of 1530, Luther faced challenges from all sides, his life threatened several times; however, this was also a period in which he had clear goals and actively engaged in discourse. He expressed his arguments on many issues in real-world situations, and his thought and structure matured increasingly.

About the Author

Martin Luther was born into a tenant farmer’s family in Eisleben, Germany. His father encouraged him to study law at the University of Erfurt. There, he studied philosophy and law, read classical texts, and earned his master’s degree at the age of twenty, becoming a civil lawyer. However, after a lightning strike during a journey that killed his companion, Luther abandoned law and entered an Augustinian monastery in July 1505. He was ordained a priest in 1507 and then served as a lecturer in philosophy and Biblical studies at the University of Wittenberg, earning his doctorate in theology at the age of thirty. In 1517, opposing indulgences, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the doors of the Wittenberg church, thus launching a revolutionary church reform movement known in history as the Reformation.
