Luther’s Works Volume Two: Reformation Writings II
Erasmus said, “Luther committed two sins: shaking the papacy’s crown and striking the bellies of the monks.”
Martin Luther’s Reformation movement, initiated with his pen, words, and truth, shook the authority of the entire corrupt papacy and threatened the interests of its parasites. This immense “sin” forced Luther, who was at the forefront of the Reformation, to retreat to Wartburg in 1521.
However, the Reformation movement did not disappear; instead, it spread like wildfire throughout Germany and rapidly developed in other parts of Europe. Some movements even deviated from Luther’s peaceful reformation, venturing onto a radical path—monasteries were attacked, altars were destroyed, and violent resistance became frequent. From 1522 onwards, Luther returned to Wittenberg, resolutely facing two fronts: continuing his earlier theological debates and criticizing the Roman Catholic Church; and opposing the various fanatical ideologies and radical actions within the Reformation camp.
Synopsis: This volume, the second in the “Reformation Documents” section of Luther’s Collected Works, contains eight important treatises written between 1522 and 1526 when Luther faced attacks from two fronts. Based on their content, they can be divided into three parts: the first discusses the nature of the pastoral office and its relationship with the church faithful; the second criticizes the reform movements initiated by fanatical believers such as Mintzl and Galerstein; and the final work, “On the Bondage of the Will,” is Luther’s rebuttal to Erasmus’s “On Free Will,” a lengthy discourse of hundreds of thousands of words that fully demonstrates the refinement of Luther’s theology and his eloquence. A careful reading of the works in this volume reveals how a reformer used truth to resist corrupt tradition while simultaneously condemning radical reform movements; his theological insights are thought-provoking and an inspiration to the lives of believers, making this an invaluable theological masterpiece.

About the Author
Martin Luther was born into a tenant farmer’s family in Eisleben, Germany. His father encouraged him to study law at the University of Erfurt. There, he studied philosophy and law, read classical texts, and earned his master’s degree at the age of twenty, becoming a civil lawyer. However, after a lightning strike during a journey that killed his companion, Luther abandoned law and entered an Augustinian monastery in July 1505. He was ordained a priest in 1507 and then served as a lecturer in philosophy and Biblical studies at the University of Wittenberg, earning his doctorate in theology at the age of thirty. In 1517, opposing indulgences, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the doors of the Wittenberg church, thus launching a revolutionary church reform movement known in history as the Reformation.
