Faith Active in Love: An Investigation of the Principles Underlying Luther’s Social Ethics

Although Martin Luther’s Reformation has been affirmed in Western history, and even today’s bishops have changed their previous views on him. His unique perspectives on faith and conduct remain controversial within the Christian community, especially among Chinese believers. Synopsis: The great reformer Luther reiterated the crucial New Testament lesson: reconciliation with God is not by works, but by faith and by grace; yet this was criticized as leading Christianity away from ethics and discipline. Author George W. Forell powerfully refutes this misunderstanding of the function of grace and faith, pointing out that Christian faith is by no means devoid of ethical and moral efficacy; on the contrary, it only has life in perfect love for one’s neighbor and brother. This book not only defends the Reformation movement ethically, but also has a very close relevance to the ethical problems we face today for every discerning reader.
