Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture: Luke

Early Christian preaching primarily involved interpreting the Bible, explaining the day’s verses to the congregation. People gathered expecting to hear someone read and proclaim the word of God. While the Gospels most frequently discussed by the Church Fathers were Matthew and John, Luke was often chosen for reading during Christmas, Easter, and other major holidays because of its unique account of Jesus’ birth and resurrection, which was absent in other Gospels. Reading Luke with the Church Fathers is a way of seeing how they used this Gospel. Here, we see how adept the Church Fathers were at using the Bible, and how they didn’t have the dictionary aids we have today. For them, interpreting Scripture with Scripture was not only a principle of interpretation but also a core principle of pastoral care using Scripture. Four volumes of the Church Fathers’ commentaries on the Gospel of Luke have survived to this day, all collections of sermons. The authors are Origen, Ambrose, Cyril of Alexandria, and Beth, along with fragments and commentaries from other Church Fathers, including the more well-known Athanasius, Chrysostom, Augustine, and John of Damascus, and the lesser-known Gashanus, Philoxenus of Mabug, and Diophantus.
