威爾·杜蘭（Will Durant，1885-1981），美國麻省北亞當姆人。美國最著名的通俗哲學史家、歷史學家。他先后在聖彼得學院和哥倫比亞大學受高等教育，曾擔任報社的實習記者、中學教師。后來進入哥倫比亞大學研究所追隨毛根和蓋爾金專攻生物學，并在伍伯利和杜威的指導下專攻哲學，1917年獲哥大博士學位。
從1914年起，他就在紐約的一家長老會堂演講哲學史與文學史，前后14年，為他的《哲學的故事》與《世界文明史》兩部書預作準備。1926年，出版《哲學的故事》獲得出乎意料的成功，從此偕同夫人投注畢生精力從事《世界文明史》的著述。1967年，該書榮獲美國普利策大獎（Pulitzer Prize），并得到西方讀書界、學術界的普遍贊譽。20世紀30年代杜蘭的著作就被譯成中文，為中國讀者所熟悉。《肚界文明史》被稱為20世紀之《史記》和《漢書》。
杜蘭一直認為，一般分類歷史寫作法對于評價或批判人類整體的生活都有欠公正；歷史的寫作，一定要經緯兼顧，分析與綜論并用；最理想的歷史撰述應設法把每一時代、每一國家的文化、組織、發展和變動等整個錯綜復雜的現象都加以綜述。
Will Durant (1885-1981), born in North Adams, Massachusetts, was one of America’s most famous popular historians and philosophers. He received his higher education at St. Peter’s College and Columbia University, and worked as a newspaper intern and high school teacher. He later entered Columbia University’s graduate school, studying biology under Maugan and Gellkin, and philosophy under Woolbury and Dewey, receiving his Ph.D. from Columbia in 1917.
From 1914, he lectured on the history of philosophy and literature for 14 years at a Presbyterian church in New York, preparing for his two books, The Story of Philosophy and The History of Civilization. In 1926, The Story of Philosophy was published to unexpected success, after which he and his wife devoted their lives to writing The History of Civilization. In 1967, the book won the Pulitzer Prize and received widespread acclaim from Western readers and academics. Durant’s works were translated into Chinese in the 1930s and became familiar to Chinese readers. The History of Civilization is often referred to as the Records of the Grand Historian and the Book of Han of the 20th century.
Durant consistently believed that general classification-based historical writing is unjust in evaluating or criticizing human life as a whole; historical writing must consider both breadth and depth, combining analysis and synthesis; the ideal historical work should attempt to summarize the entire complex phenomenon of culture, organization, development, and change in every era and every nation.
