路德對自己的理解，基本上不是一個學者，而是一位蒙召負責宣講和教導的牧者。無論是在大學裏授課，還是在教堂講台上宣講路德都持守這個召命和堅持這個原則。
我們很難想像他即使是與人作神學辯論的時候，也不稍稍忘記或猶豫實踐自己的召命。無論是達官貴人，抑或是平民百姓，只要有求於他的，那怕是在半夜裏或他體弱多病之際，路德都一視同仁地伺機和盡量回應。
本卷收錄的這些文章雖然不是甚麼神學巨著，但每篇的主題和內容信息都清楚易見 ，而且每篇都有一定的聖經佐證和神學論點，對牧養和培育信徒甚至教牧都有劃時代的助益。所以，說它們是路德的「牧靈文獻」既名副其實，也讓讀者可以有洽當和合理的期望。
Luther’s Works Volume Twelve: Devotional Writings
Luther understood himself not fundamentally as a scholar, but as a pastor called to preach and teach. Whether lecturing at university or preaching from the church pulpit, Luther upheld this calling and adhered to this principle.
It’s hard to imagine that even when engaging in theological debates, he wouldn’t forget or hesitate to practice his calling. Whether high-ranking officials or ordinary people, whoever sought his help, even in the middle of the night or when he was ill, Luther responded to them all with equal urgency and effort.
While the articles collected in this volume are not theological masterpieces, the themes and content of each are clear and easily understood, and each contains Biblical evidence and theological arguments, offering epoch-making benefits to pastoral care and the nurturing of believers, and even to pastors themselves. Therefore, calling them Luther’s “devotional writings” is both apt and allows readers to have appropriate and reasonable expectations.
內容簡介：本卷為《路德文集》卷十二，名為《牧靈文獻》，包涵了路德在 1519 至 1545 年間二十一篇關乎牧養和培育信徒甚至教牧的文章。

馬丁路德（Martin Luther），出生於德國艾斯勒本（Eisleben）的一戶佃農家庭，他父親鼓勵他進入愛爾福特（Erfurt）大學攻讀法律。他在那裡修習哲學與法律課程，研讀古典著作，並在二十歲獲得碩士學位，接著就成為民法律師。然而，在旅途中遭遇雷擊導致隨行同伴死亡後，路德就捨棄法律，並在1505年7月進入奧古斯丁修會的修道院。他在1507年被按立為神父，接著在威登堡（Wittneburg）大學擔任哲學與聖經研究講師，並在三十歲時獲得神學博士。1517年因反對贖罪券，馬丁路德把他的95條論綱釘在威登堡（Wittenberg）教會大門上，之後啟動了一場翻天覆地的教會改革運動，歷史上稱之為宗教改革。
Martin Luther was born into a tenant farmer’s family in Eisleben, Germany. His father encouraged him to study law at the University of Erfurt. There, he studied philosophy and law, read classical texts, and earned his master’s degree at the age of twenty, becoming a civil lawyer. However, after a lightning strike during a journey that killed his companion, Luther abandoned law and entered an Augustinian monastery in July 1505. He was ordained a priest in 1507 and then served as a lecturer in philosophy and Biblical studies at the University of Wittenberg, earning his doctorate in theology at the age of thirty. In 1517, opposing indulgences, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the doors of the Wittenberg church, thus launching a revolutionary church reform movement known in history as the Reformation.
