The Spirituality of the Cross: The Way of the First Evangelicals

“This book resolves the long-standing tug-of-war between society and the church.” We are constantly torn between busy work and quiet meditation. Sometimes society and the church emphasize the importance of spiritual reflection, and sometimes they emphasize the contributions of busy work.

—Dr. Lam Tak-ho, President of Lutheran Theological Seminary, Hong Kong

Every Christian has likely experienced this: in the early stages of faith, spiritual growth is rapid, often experiencing the sweetness of walking with the Lord; as time goes on, the pace of growth seems to slow, and God seems to become more distant.

Author Gene Edward Veith, Jr. mentions in the book that many people, in pursuing spiritual depth, only expect extraordinary spiritual experiences, without putting in the effort to build a stable spiritual outlook. A spiritual outlook is not an abstruse theological theory, but rather an understanding of the relationship between God, humanity, and life.

Synopsis: This book is an introductory text to the Lutheran spiritual tradition. Building a stable spiritual outlook inevitably requires theology. However, the author abandons profound theological terms and instead reflects on the issues of justification, grace, work, and life from the perspective of a layperson, hoping to share his insights from Lutheran theology so that you too can be helped and your spiritual life can deepen.
