Reformation: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

In today’s consumerist and virtual culture, the church has gradually forgotten the Christian life and experience centered on the cross, and neglected the importance of the “written word” (the Bible) and preaching.
The author reiterates the spirit of the Reformation and the propositions of the Reformers, emphasizing: the theology of the cross, the history of salvation, systematic theology, exegetical preaching, and the assurance of the believer’s blessing.

Synopsis: The author defines the 16th-century Reformation as “a movement that placed the God who manifests himself in Christ at the center of church life and thought.” He first points out the connection between the Reformation and today, then elaborates on three aspects of this definition:

(1) The church emphasizes Jesus Christ and His crucifixion

(2) It emphasizes that the Bible is the foundation and standard upon which we preach Christ

(3) The church emphasizes that the assurance of salvation is the normal experience of all Christians.

This book allows us to draw valuable teachings and legacies from the Reformation.

He first heard the Gospel at the Graham Evangelical Fellowship in England in 1984, and later truly came to know God’s grace through the works of J.J. Packer. 1988 Master’s degree from St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge; 1991 PhD from the University of Aberdeen; 1998-2007 Editor of the journal Themelios (Theological and Faith Studies) and advisor to the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals; 1991-2001 Taught at the University of Aberdeen and the University of Nottingham; 2001-Teach at Westminster Theological Seminary, Pennsylvania, USA; 2006-2012 Provost of Westminster Theological Seminary; 2012-Present Paul Woolley Chair of Church History at Westminster Theological Seminary, focusing on writing and teaching. Currently serving as the pastor of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, Ambler, Pennsylvania, and one of the hosts of the Mortification of Spin online multimedia broadcast.

Truman describes himself as a round English stake stuck in the square hole of an American stake. In teaching church history, he is dedicated to cultivating students’ historical perspective and methods of reading history, enabling them to critically understand their own culture and circumstances.

He emphasizes that all Christians should have a basic understanding of church history for three reasons: first, to understand why the church has various ideas, statements, and practices; second, to avoid repeating the same theological or (and) church errors every few years; and third, to understand how God has preserved and supported the church throughout history. He believes the real problem with evangelicals is their intoxication with “popular culture,” leading to an increasingly impoverished basic understanding of faith among ordinary Christians. When Christians encounter those who hold different views on theology, politics, and morality, they should honestly discuss their differences according to the principle of the Ninth Commandment, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”
