(TO GET INTO THE MIND OF GOD)!

Theory and Practice of Hermeneutics

Several years ago, when I began guiding Chinese theological students, my first assigned course included “Theory and Empirical Study of Biblical Studies.” The dean didn’t provide homework, notes, or a bibliography; he simply introduced me to a theological student who was eagerly anticipating learning “hermeneutics.” Undoubtedly, this is the origin of this book, as there were no Chinese textbooks available to teach this course at the time.

The questions of hermeneutics impacted us like a storm—it was the core of the world’s literary revolution, currently unfolding vigorously at all levels: the search for “meaning in life.”

Each chapter in this book quickly reveals my personal preference for the single, singular meaning of the Biblical authors, and I firmly believe that modern people can discover the intentions of both the human and heavenly authors of the Bible. Without this belief, I could never have written this book.

A famous musician, in a recent meeting, resonated with the book’s theme, saying that the first and most important part of musical performance is “Understanding composition is the heart of the family.” This is ultimately the main goal of hermeneutics: to understand the mind of God!
