Evangelical Lutheran Mission Society for the Chinese

About ELMSC

We are a mission society that exists to support the establishment and strengthening of confessional Lutheran Chinese churches worldwide, in part through Chinese Lutheran theological education and Chinese Lutheran resource development.  We are a Recognized Service Organization (RSO) of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS).

The Evangelical Lutheran Mission Society for the Chinese (ELMSC) was established in 2013 to aid in the establishment and support of confessional Lutheran Chinese churches worldwide.  The old Bleckmar Mission motto of “Lutheran missions must lead to Lutheran congregations” has been adopted by the ELMSC as its underlying basis.  From its inception, the society has sought to support the LCMS Office of International Mission and the Office of National Mission in its own efforts to support confessional Lutheran Chinese work.  To that end, the ELMSC became an official Recognized Service Organization (RSO) of the LCMS in 2019.  In its first seven years of history, the society has primarily focused on theological education and resource development for the Chinese Lutheran Church.  Its most visible and consistent effort has been its annual Chinese Seminar on Holy Scripture and Luther’s Small Catechism, held on the campus of Concordia Theological Seminary, Ft. Wayne, Indiana.  Aside from that, the society has supported the translation into Chinese of various Lutheran resources, including the pilot edition of the Chinese Lutheran Service Book.  Finally, the society has also financially supported a Chinese seminary student and a Chinese pastor.

The society logo uses as its base Luther’s seal.  Below the seal are traditional Chinese characters that read, “On account of Christ, through faith, declared righteous.”  Within the heart is a cross that has a Chinese character superimposed on it.  The Chinese character means “come.”  The idea that the logo expresses is that Christ comes to the human heart through the proclamation of the Gospel message.  The words at the bottom summarize article four of the Augsburg Confession.  When that Gospel message is proclaimed through the preaching office, the Holy Spirit works faith in Christ when and where He pleases (article five).
